The Basic Chain Stitch

This is the simplest stitch to perform but it is not used much because if one end becomes free the rest will easily come undone. |
The Parts

| There is only one thread which goes through the needle eye. A looping hook catches the thread under the cloth and holds it as the needle is raised. The cloth is moved forward and the needle descends through the loop held by the hook. The hook then moves back and advances again to catch the next loop which prevents the first loop from pulling upward through the cloth. |
