The Basic Lick

This tutorial is for the right hand only.
It is assumed that you already know some basic chord shapes and that you can tune the guitar etc.
In the table below, the first column gives some explanation, the second column the string sequence followed by the fingers used and a audio demo.

Now let's get started.......You need to play an A-minor in the first position.

This is what you are aiming for in this lesson. Practice SLOWLY, get it right every time. It will take a few weeks to get fluent.

Speed will come without any special effort from you. Now take your time learning the four steps below.

Example

Example

Use the third and fourth strings down from the thickest (bottom E) string only. Use your thumb and index fingers only. No middle finger.

4,3,4,3,4,3 etc.

T,I,T,I etc.

As above but, using the thumb, pluck the second string (A) down in between each 4,3 set. The thumb then alternates between strings 2 & 3. 5,43,5,43 etc. T,T,I,T,T,I
As above but this time make the thumb alternate between the two base strings (5,6). Still no middle finger. This is the hardest bit so persevere. Keep coming back to it.

5,43,6,43,

5,43,6,43

As above T,T,I,T,T,I

Now comes the middle finger. Play what you have just learnt - slowly. Just after plucking string 6 and just before the last 4,3 twiddle pluck string 2 (second up) with the middle finger.

That's it for now! It took me several weeks to get to here so do not give up. You are ready for the next step when you are as fluent as the example at the top of this table. Try it with different chords.

5,43,6,2,43 T,T,I,T,M,T,I
